U.S. Tax Deadline for Canadians

Question: When are taxes due for Canadians or Americans living and working in Canada?

Answer: April 15th is the tax deadline in the United States for calendar year tax payers. If you paper file your return, as long as the envelope is postmarked on or before April 15th and the address is correct, you will have filed timely.

Now, as for anyone with an obligation to file U.S. taxes who is not in the United States on April 15th and their main place of business is outside of the U.S., you have an automatic 2 month extension. Also, if you are in the military or navy and stationed in Canada.

Here's what you need to do:

  • File your 1040 or 1040NR tax return by June 15th
  • Attach a statement to your tax return explaining your qualifying situation.
  • You can file a 6 month extension, but be careful, if you are more than 16 months late in filing your tax returns and payments, you may be ineligible  to claim 2555 and 1116 deductions and credits.
That's the U.S. tax deadlines for Canadians and Americans living in Canada as far as U.S. income taxes go.
