How to Correct FBAR and E-File Amended Fincen report 114

I have made a page with information on how to correct i.e. amend an FBAR. There are several reasons why you may need to correct an FBAR:

  1. Wrong Calendar Year (Box 1)
  2. Wrong Name, Date of Birth, Tax Payer Identification Number (Part I: Box 3,5,7,8)
  3. Account listed in wrong category (separately/jointly/Signature Authority/Consolidated Report)
  4. Wrong Account Information, etc..

Step 1: Open your original FBAR PDF file

Open the file that you need to correct. As the popup window suggests, you should have named it something that identifies it as the fbar such as SMITHFBAR2013.PDF in an easily accessible location.

Step 2: Unlock the fillable fields by clicking "Remove Signature"

The Javascript window will pop up saying, "Are you sure you want to remove the signature?". Click "Yes".

Step 3:  Check Amended and enter prior report BSA identifier

On the filer information page box 1, check the amended box and enter the prior report BSA identifier. The prior report BSA identifier would have been emailed to you from with the title "FinCen Acknowledgement".

Step 4: Make your corrections

Make your corrections to the form, be sure to double check everything.

Step 5: Click "Sign the Form", then "Save"

I would suggest saving the amended form as whatever your first form was called with "AMENDED" at the end.

Example: SMITHFBAR2014AMENDED.PDF. Be sure to not overwrite your original.

Step 6: Click "Ready to File" and enter email address and contact info

File the FBAR as before. once you click on the Ready to File button, you will get to the upload window at the BSA website. Enter your information and select your amended file to upload.

Tips: Print your confirmation screen once the amended return has been uploaded, or press the print screen button and save as a screen shot for your records.

If you need any help or have any questions about filing FBARS, please contact me.
